About This Audiobook

This audiobook is an engaging historical thriller that delves into the infamous resurrection of Jesus Christ. The story is narrated by Virtual Voice, whose detached, matter-of-fact delivery fits the Roman merchant's perspective of Theophilus. As he investigates the life and death of Jesus, Theophilus navigates a complex web of politics, corruption, and deceit. What starts as a seemingly straightforward inquiry into the resurrection spirals into a gripping adventure that draws listeners in.

Unfortunately, the execution falls short, as the author's writing style often feels clunky and heavy-handed. The story tries to tackle too many themes, resulting in a disjointed narrative that struggles to hold the listener's attention. Despite this, the premise remains intriguing, and fans of historical thrillers may find themselves invested in Theophilus's quest for the truth.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I was initially drawn to this audiobook by its captivating premise, but unfortunately, my enthusiasm waned as the story progressed. Virtual Voice's narration is serviceable, but it fails to elevate the material, which is often stilted and predictable. The pacing is uneven, with long stretches of exposition that slow the narrative to a crawl. One of the most jarring aspects is the abrupt transitions between scenes, which feel more like abrupt cuts than organic developments. Additionally, some of the supporting characters are woefully underdeveloped, making it difficult to become invested in their stories. That being said, there are glimpses of brilliance throughout the narrative, particularly in the depiction of ancient Rome's corruption and power struggles. These moments are fleeting, however, and often feel like afterthoughts rather than integral parts of the story. Overall, I would caution listeners to approach this audiobook with tempered expectations. While it has some intriguing elements, it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to craft a compelling, suspenseful narrative.
