As someone who's always on the lookout for fresh voices in the sci-fi genre, I was thoroughly charmed by Constantin Step's debut novel. The Dwarf, the Mine, and the RPG Apocalypse has all the hallmarks of a cult classic: offbeat humor, a relatable protagonist, and a narrative that's equal parts action-packed and intellectually stimulating. Daniel Thomas May's narration is a big part of the book's appeal, bringing a warmth and humanity to the story that's simply captivating. That being said, I do wish the pacing had been slightly more even throughout. At times, the story feels a tad disjointed, with some plot threads feeling a bit under-developed. However, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a wildly entertaining listen. May's performance more than makes up for these minor flaws, and his ability to convey the protagonist's emotions and motivations is truly exceptional.
