About This Audiobook

Dive into the intricate web of espionage and deception with 'The Man with the Poison Gun'. This gripping true crime tale follows the enigmatic Bogdan Stashinsky, a KGB assassin whose defection to West Germany in 1961 would send shockwaves throughout the Cold War. Plokhy masterfully weaves a narrative that delves into the darkest corners of human nature, revealing the manipulations and machinations of a spy who walked the thin line between loyalty and self-preservation.

Through Clive Chafer's immersive narration, you'll be drawn into the intense atmosphere of the Stashinsky trial, where the assassin's secrets were laid bare. Chafer's measured tone and deliberate pace perfectly capture the gravity of this pivotal moment in history. What sets 'The Man with the Poison Gun' apart, however, is its nuanced exploration of the psychological complexities at play. Plokhy's meticulous research reveals the intricacies of Stashinsky's motivations, humanizing a character often relegated to the realm of espionage legend.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

As I listened to 'The Man with the Poison Gun', I found myself drawn into the dark world of Cold War espionage, where allegiances were constantly tested and loyalty was a luxury few could afford. Clive Chafer's narration was a masterclass in subtlety, bringing a depth and nuance to the story that made it impossible to look away. Plokhy's writing, too, was a standout feature – his ability to humanize Stashinsky without excusing his crimes was a remarkable achievement. If I have any critique, it's that the audiobook could have benefited from a more detailed discussion of the aftermath of Stashinsky's defection. While Plokhy does an excellent job of laying out the events leading up to the trial, the consequences of Stashinsky's actions – both for himself and the world at large – feel somewhat glossed over. Nevertheless, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise exceptional audiobook. Chafer's performance, in particular, is worth praise – his ability to convey the tension and drama of the Stashinsky trial is nothing short of remarkable.
