Ruthie Ann Miles perfectly captures Li-yan’s youthful innocence, while Kimiko Glenn’s grandmother is a commanding presence with every word. Despite its sweeping scope, the audiobook maintains a steady pace that never drags. The emotional climax felt both inevitable and moving, thanks to an impeccable blend of storytelling and narration. A few minor pacing issues, particularly in some of the male voices, occasionally distract from the overall quality, but they are small faults in what is otherwise a deeply satisfying audiobook.
