About This Audiobook

Nyani Nkrumah's debut novel, Wade in the Water, is a masterful exploration of racial tension, family secrets, and the unbreakable spirit of a young girl growing up in a Mississippi town. With a narrative that flows effortlessly, Nkrumah weaves a rich tapestry of characters, each with their own complexities and motivations. At the heart of the story is an unforgettable protagonist, whose struggles to find her place in a world that often seems hostile, yet fiercely loving. Eboni Flowers and Teri Schnaubelt bring the characters to life with nuanced performances that complement Nkrumah's evocative prose. Their dual narration is a particular highlight, with Flowers' energetic delivery perfectly capturing the protagonist's spirited moments, while Schnaubelt's soothing tones bring depth to the supporting characters.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

As I listened to Wade in the Water, I found myself completely absorbed in the world Nkrumah has created. The story has a natural rhythm, moving seamlessly from moments of quiet introspection to explosive outbursts of emotion. The dual narration is a key element in creating this sense of flow, with Flowers and Schnaubelt working together to build a sense of tension and release that mirrors the protagonist's own journey. One of the things that struck me about this audiobook was the way it handled complex themes like racism and identity. While the subject matter can be uncomfortable at times, Nkrumah tackles it with sensitivity and nuance. If I have any criticisms, it's that the pacing can sometimes feel a bit uneven, with some sections feeling a bit rushed. However, this is a minor quibble in what is otherwise a truly exceptional audiobook.
