About This Audiobook

M. R. James’ *Ghost Stories, Volume 2* isn’t just a collection of spooky yarns—it’s a masterclass in creeping dread, delivered with the precision of a scholar who knows exactly how to unsettle his audience. These six stories, narrated with eerie elegance by Derek Jacobi, blend antiquarian curiosity with supernatural horror, where the real terror often lurks in what isn’t said. James’ prose is rich with academic detail, but the horror sneaks in through the cracks: a cursed artifact in a museum, a spectral figure glimpsed in a mirror, or an ancient manuscript whose words refuse to stay on the page. The brevity of the tales makes them razor-sharp; there’s no room for fluff, just the slow unraveling of sanity. If you’ve ever stayed up late poring over old books, you’ll recognize the dread of opening something best left closed—and James ensures you’ll think twice before doing so again.

Jacobi’s narration is the secret weapon here. His voice—smooth, measured, and dripping with quiet authority—transforms each story into an intimate confession rather than a campfire tale. He doesn’t overplay the scares; instead, he lets James’ carefully crafted tension simmer, his cadence shifting just enough to signal when the supernatural is about to intrude. The result is an audiobook that feels like a whispered warning from a friend who’s seen too much. This isn’t horror that shrieks—it’s horror that seeps into your bones.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Derek Jacobi’s narration of *Ghost Stories, Volume 2* is so good it borders on unsettling in its own right. His delivery of James’ tales—like *The Ash Tree* or *Number 13*—feels like being read to by a ghost himself: measured, deliberate, with just the right hint of dry academia masking something far less rational. Jacobi’s voice has a way of making even the most mundane details sound ominous, which is perfect for James’ style. In *The Mezzotint*, for instance, he delivers the slow reveal of the image in a way that had me leaning in, half-expecting to see it shift myself. The production is crisp, with no distracting audio flourishes, allowing the stories to work their quiet magic undisturbed. That said, Jacobi isn’t infallible. His performance in *Canon Alberic’s Scrap-Book* occasionally stumbles over James’ dense historical references, making the prose feel a tad stiffer than it should. And while *The Tractate Middoth* is a standout—its rural setting and creeping dread translating beautifully—a few of the stories could’ve benefited from a bit more dynamic pacing to offset their scholarly tone. But these are minor quibbles. By the final story, I was fully under James’ spell, Jacobi’s voice now synonymous with the chill of a drafty old library at midnight. If you love horror that’s more psychological than gory, this audiobook is a must-listen—but maybe don’t listen alone.
