Cade Grayson is a protagonist who feels like he’s been ground through a meat grinder: he’s got the moves, the trauma, and the emotional range of a man who’s lost everything but still keeps fighting, even when there’s nothing left to save. The Omega virus isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a character, a relentless force that turns towns into charnel houses and survivors into something *other*. Chesser’s writing is visceral, the kind of horror that leaves your skin prickling because it feels *possible*, like this could’ve happened if the world ever bent just a little too far. Adam Paul’s narration is the reason this audiobook *works*—his Cade is less a hero and more a man broken but still standing, his voice a gravelly growl that somehow conveys warmth even in the bleakest moments. The production is crisp, the pacing brisk enough to keep the adrenaline pumping, but the real kicker is how Paul sells Cade’s relationships, especially with his daughter. The emotional beats land hard because he makes the love feel *real*, and that’s what makes the horror hit so much harder. My only quibble? The Omega virus’s origin gets glossed over a bit too quickly—it’d have been nice to sink deeper into its lore, but that’s a minor nitpick in an otherwise stellar listen.
