About This Audiobook

Diane Namm pares the Greek myths down to their muscular core, leaving out the boring footnotes and moralizing preamble. What’s left is a swift, crackling audiobook where Heracles flexes his 12 labors, Pandora’s box flies open with a hiss, and King Midas learns his wish is both gift and jail. The language is clean and contemporary—no archaic “Wherefore art thou”s—so the stories land like modern campfire tales rather than dusty classroom recitations. Rebecca K. Reynolds nails the vocal choreography: she growls as the Minotaur, purrs as the Sphinx, and cracks a mischievous grin with Hermes’s every sneaky trick. Even the quieter episodes—Echo’s loneliness, Psyche’s solitary climb—gain emotional punch because the pacing never drags. If you’ve ever felt Greek myths are too long, too dusty, or too many, this trimmed-down sprint will surprise you.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I popped this on during a cross-country drive when my six-year-old demanded “a myth that isn’t boring.” Rebecca K. Reynolds’s narration hit the accelerator from the first line: the dry, playful tone made Cronus’s cannibalistic snack sound like a bedtime story gone rogue. Her Heracles is less muscle-bound demigod and more exhausted dad doing overtime chores—hilarious and oddly relatable. The standout was “The Flight of Icarus,” where Reynolds lets the waxy horror build in a hush before the inevitable crack-up, making the lesson land like a gut-punch rather than a lecture. My only nit: the abrupt fade-out after “The Trojan Horse” left me craving the wooden beast’s gory entrance. Production is bright and studio-clean, so the handful of sound effects (howling winds, clanking chains) never feel cheesy. All told, this is the rare children’s mythology title that can hold its own on a cross-country trip, a bedtime ritual, or a classroom road-trip playlist—proof that these old stories still pulse.
