She nails the Southern cadence without veering into parody, giving each character a voice that feels earned rather than assigned. The Whitaker family’s dynamics are the heart of the story—their love is loud, their resentments are quiet, and Hanna’s script balances both with surprising nuance. The audiobook’s production is crisp, with just enough background ambiance (think distant cicadas or a crackling fireplace) to sell the setting without distraction. That said, the middle act drags a bit—the conflict between defiance and duty could’ve tightened its screws earlier. And while Smith’s performance is stellar, I wished she’d leaned harder into the humor; some of the family’s banter lands flat when it should’ve been a spotlight.
