Hanging Fire

I’ll admit, I approached *Hanging Fire* skeptical of yet another ‘tough guy with a past’ western, but Eric Red disarms you in the first chapter. Joe Noose isn’t a hero; he’s a man who’s good at killing and bad at quitting, and Bonny Kate Valence isn’t a femme fatale cliché—she’s a survivalist who’s outplayed every man dumb enough to underestimate her. Their cat-and-mouse game is the heart of the book, and Red writes it with the tension of a coiled rattler. The pacing is relentless, but not in a breathless way; it’s the slow, inevitable burn of a fuse you *know* is about to blow. George Guidall’s performance is a masterclass in restraint. He doesn’t *act* so much as *inhabit*—his Noose sounds like a man who’s seen too many sunrises through a rifle scope, and his Bonny Kate is all honeyed menace. My only critique? The middle act sags slightly when the plot detours into a subplot about a corrupt railroad baron; it’s well-written, but it pulls focus from the Noose-Valence showdown. And while the sound production is clean, a few scenes could’ve used more atmospheric background noise (a saloon’s murmur, distant gunfire) to deepen immersion. Still, this is a western that respects its audience’s intelligence—no white hats, no easy morals, just two predators circling each other in a landscape that doesn’t care who wins.
