About This Audiobook

Hannah Bunch, the preacher’s dutiful but overlooked daughter, decides to skip providence and take divine matters into her own hands. Inspired by Ruth’s bold threshing floor maneuver, Hannah concocts a plan to nudge her shy suitor—her father’s new assistant preacher—toward matrimony. It’s a scheme as calculating as it is devout, blending the quiet charm of a small-town church with the sly wit of a woman who knows exactly what she wants. Pamela Morsi crafts a historical romance that’s equal parts tender and tongue-in-cheek, where faith and foolhardy hope collide with delightful results.

Beth Hicks’s narration brims with warmth and wit, giving each character their own distinct cadence. Hannah’s exasperation crackles like static, her suitor’s awkwardness lands with endearing cringe, and the town’s gossips practically sing with mischief. Hicks’s pacing keeps the story buoyant even in its quieter moments, making this audiobook a joy to listen to whether you’re folding laundry or commuting. The production quality is crisp, with no distracting fidgets or overdone accents—just a clean, immersive experience that lets Morsi’s clever dialogue and sharp humor shine.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was wary of a romance where the heroine’s big plan hinges on a biblical loophole, but Pamela Morsi pulls it off with such originality and heart that my skepticism vanished within minutes. Hannah isn’t the usual simpering spinster—she’s sharp, stubborn, and just pious enough to make her schemes feel like divine inspiration rather than meddling. Her dynamic with the painfully shy preacher’s assistant is achingly funny, their interactions laced with enough stumbling and second-guessing to make you squirm in the best way. The small-town gossip ring, led by Hannah’s nosy aunts, adds a layer of small-town absurdity that keeps the story lively without veering into caricature. Beth Hicks’s narration deserves its own standing ovation. She nails the balance between earnestness and humor, especially in Hannah’s internal monologues—her exasperation at her own lack of suitors crackles with dry wit, while the suitor’s blundering attempts to propose nearly made me laugh out loud. The production is polished but never sterile, with subtle use of ambient sounds to ground the listener in Hannah’s world. My only quibble is the epilogue, which wraps up a bit too neatly for my taste—I wanted at least one lingering thread left dangling. But if you love historical romances that blend humor, heart, and a touch of the unconventional, this audiobook is a heavenly match.
