The audiobook’s strength lies in these “aha” moments, delivered in Sawyer’s warm, conversational tone. He avoids the pitfall of many narrators in this genre: over-dramatizing the mystical or sounding like a Wikipedia entry. Instead, he treats the material like a detective briefing you on a cold case, leaning into intrigue without hokum. That said, the book isn’t perfect. Smoley’s breadth occasionally comes at the expense of depth—his section on Rosicrucianism, for example, skims over the political tensions that fueled its secrecy, leaving me wanting more. And while Sawyer’s performance is mostly flawless, his pronunciation of Hebrew terms (e.g., *Ein Sof*) wavers slightly, a minor but noticeable stumble in an otherwise polished delivery. Still, these are quibbles. The real triumph here is how *Hidden Wisdom* makes esoterica feel *urgent*. By the time Smoley ties 17th-century Christian Kabbalists to today’s “spiritual but not religious” crowd, you’ll find yourself pausing the audiobook to scribble notes—or at least Googling *The Kybalion*
