That said, there were moments where the audiobook’s production felt slightly too polished; the ambient sounds (distant footsteps, hushed conversations) occasionally pulled me out of the story, as if I were listening through a soundproofed door. The story itself is a slow burn, but not in a way that feels indulgent. Joel’s relationships—with his crush, with a charismatic but morally ambiguous teacher, with his own burgeoning talent—are all rendered with a brutal honesty that’s rare in coming-of-age narratives. My biggest critique? The ending feels abrupt, as if Bayer wrapped things up because he’d said all he needed to, not because the story warranted it. But if you’re the kind of listener who values atmosphere and psychological depth over neat resolutions, this audiobook will haunt you long after the final chapter.
