Instead, *History of Austria* hooked me with its first chapter by framing the Hapsburgs not as dusty monarchs but as Europe’s original corporate raiders—marrying, scheming, and occasionally stumbling into greatness. Zenobia’s narration is the secret weapon here. His voice has a warm gravitas, like a PBS documentarian who’s seen some things, and he deploys it to great effect: lingering on the absurdity of Austria-Hungary’s 11 official languages, or dropping into a near-whisper for the Anschluss’s chilling details. The pacing is mostly sharp, though the post-WWII section drags slightly—too much time on economic reforms, not enough on the cultural reckoning. Where the audiobook stumbles is in its occasional over-reliance on broad strokes. The Ottoman sieges get thrilling play-by-play, but the interwar years feel rushed, as if the authors assumed we’d fill in the gaps. And while Zenobia’s delivery is generally excellent, his pronunciation of German names can be inconsistent (*Metternich* sounds different in Chapter 3 vs. Chapter 7). Still, the production quality is flawless—no distracting edits or volume spikes—and the balance between politics, culture, and daily life (like the bit on Vienna’s *Heuriger* wine taverns as resistance hubs) makes this feel alive. If you’re after a history that’s erudite but never stuffy, this is your ticket. Just don’t expect deep dives into art or music; this is power dynamics, wars, and survival, served with a side of dark humor.
