The production is crisp, with no distracting artifacts—just Andrews’ voice, perfectly balanced, carrying the weight of 5,000 years. That said, the book stumbles slightly midway: the chapter on the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms is a whirlwind of names and dates that could’ve used a tighter editorial hand. And while the finale—post-Mao economic reforms—is necessary, it’s delivered with such speed that the significance of Deng Xiaoping’s reforms barely lands. Still, these are minor quibbles. For anyone who’s ever zoned out during a dry history lecture but hungers for narrative drive, this audiobook is a masterclass in accessibility. I listened while folding laundry and still felt like I’d absorbed something substantial.
