That said, his performance isn’t flawless. While his articulation is crisp, his pacing occasionally stumbles when juggling multiple timelines, leaving me backtracking to catch a thread. That quirk aside, the audiobook shines in its storytelling. The section on the Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry, for instance, feels like a blockbuster miniseries, complete with betrayals and sieges that make the 16th century feel cinematic. The Renaissance portion is particularly stellar, framing Michelangelo’s genius and Machiavelli’s cynicism as part of a larger cultural earthquake—not just a dry list of artists. My only real gripe is the lack of a PDF companion to reference key dates or maps, which would’ve helped visualize the Alps during Hannibal’s march or the Low Countries’ rebellion. Still, for a 15-hour slog, this never felt tedious. Walton’s enthusiasm for the material is infectious, and the book’s refusal to sanitize history (looking at you, Vlad the Impaler) makes it feel urgent, not academic.
