Hold Strong

I was skeptical when I started *Hold Strong*—another WWII novel? But Dugoni and his co-writers (Langholz and Crabtree) deliver something far more intimate and harrowing than the usual battlefield sagas. The true story at its core is heart-stopping, but what makes this stand out is how it zeroes in on the civilian experience. The protagonist, a reclusive Norwegian woman, isn’t a hero by training or temperament; she’s ordinary, which makes her choices to shelter a downed pilot and his crew even more devastatingly powerful. The pacing is masterful—long stretches of dread punctuated by adrenaline-fueled escapes, and Damron’s narration ensures you’re never lulled into complacency. That said, the novel’s middle act drags slightly in the logistics of hiding the pilots, and the ending feels rushed, as if the authors were eager to tie up loose ends. Still, these are minor quibbles in a book that otherwise burns with authenticity. Damron’s performance is a revelation; his voice cracks with the weight of the characters’ fear, and his Norwegian inflections—when he slips them in—add layers of texture without ever veering into caricature. By the final chapter, I wasn’t just listening—I was holding my breath. A must-listen for fans of *The Nightingale* or *Lilac Girls*, but with an even sharper emotional punch.
