When she hesitates to pull the trigger or flirts with a suspect, it’s not just about morals; it’s about the *cost* of those choices. Greene’s writing shines in the action sequences (a stakeout gone wrong in a Houston downpour is *visceral*) and the snappy dialogue, though the romantic tension sometimes feels like it’s competing with the mystery for center stage. Stevi Incremona’s performance is a masterclass in audiobook casting. Her Holly is all business until she’s not—listen for the way her voice drops into a growl when Holly’s backed into a corner, or how she lets a beat of silence hang after a prayer. The male leads are equally well-realized; one love interest’s smooth, radio-announcer cadence makes his charm feel earned, while the other’s rougher tone hints at the baggage Holly’s too busy to unpack. My two quibbles: the sound mixing occasionally drowns out Incremona’s lower register in car-chase scenes, and the villain’s reveal leans a tad too hard on monologuing.
