Homestead on Broken Lines

I went into this expecting another tired ‘grid-down’ trope, but Homestead on Broken Lines surprised me by making the mundane feel apocalyptic. Trepanier’s narration sells Brianna’s transformation from exhausted diner owner to reluctant protector with a performance that’s equal parts weary and determined—her voice quivers when she’s terrified, sharpens when she’s cornered. The real win here, though, is the ensemble cast. May’s portrayal of Brianna’s mentor, a woman who’s seen this kind of decay before, crackles with decades of unspoken frustration, while Sorensen’s younger characters feel raw and immediate, like they’re shouting from a collapsing walkie-talkie. That said, the middle act drags under the weight of its own restraint. Lively’s insistence on lingering on the day-to-day minutiae—supply runs, repair delays, petty squabbles—sometimes slows the momentum to a crawl. The audiobook’s 38-hour runtime amplifies this; by the time Brianna’s standoff with a raider gang arrives, I found myself wishing for a faster editorial cut. Still, the production’s attention to detail—background chatter fading into static, the occasional distant gunshot—immerses you in a world where the horror isn’t the collapse, but the slow unraveling of the people you thought you knew. If you’re here for a meditation on human endurance disguised as genre fiction, this nails it. If you need nonstop action, you might want to cue up something else.
