Narration by Aaron Shedlock and Ava Lucas is the kind of performance that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook. Shedlock’s gruff, gravelly delivery nails Leo’s hard-edged persona—think Idris Elba with a Cajun accent—but it’s his quiet moments that steal the show. When Leo whispers to his son, his voice softens into something achingly tender, making the emotional payoff feel earned, not manipulative. Lucas isn’t just along for the ride; her turns as Leo’s ex, Claudia, and his sharp-witted best friend, Tasha, crackle with wit and vulnerability. The pacing, however, stumbles in the final act—some confrontations drag, and the resolution wraps up a touch too neatly after the tension built so deliciously. Production is top-notch with immersive sound design that makes Bourbon Street feel like a neighbor, but the occasional abrupt chapter transition jolts you like a bad espresso shot.
