I went into this expecting a substantive if not riveting listen, but *I Am Learning French* often feels like a recording session hastily patched together from a textbook’s exercise section. Katie H.’s segments are the stronger of the two narrators, with a measured cadence that doesn’t overcorrect for the material’s inherent stiffness, while Florence A. occasionally lands on phrases with an unnerving cheerfulness that undercuts the dryness of the content. The pacing isn’t inherently bad—it’s just that the audiobook’s relentless march through lists of words and verb tables starts to feel like listening to a metronome stuck on repeat. My biggest critique is the lack of context: hearing “Je voudrais un café” is useful, but without a scene or backstory to hang it on, it’s just noise. The production is clean, at least, with no distracting pops or hiss, but the real sticking point is whether you can tolerate 240 minutes of what amounts to audio flashcards. If you’re the kind of learner who thrives on immersion-style repetition, this might work—otherwise, you’ll probably find it exhausting. Worth a free sample, but don’t bet your A1 French goals on it.
