Andrei Matei’s narration is the glue that makes this book work as an audio experience. His ability to pivot from mocking bureaucratic jargon to the kind of weary resignation you’d expect from someone who’s watched one too many committees dissolve into chaos is masterful. When Ilie Mario Rafael’s story unfolds, it’s less about plot and more about the slow, suffocating realization that competence is a liability in environments where the status quo thrives on failure. The pacing is tight, but not in a way that feels rushed—rather, it mirrors the way bureaucracy actually operates: interminable, then suddenly sprinting toward a nonsensical dead end. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The production occasionally feels like it’s fighting for air in the middle of a crowded room; some background noises bleed into the narrative, and the editing doesn’t always smooth out the rough edges. Worse, the satire risks becoming a closed loop if you’re not already familiar with Romanian political culture. A few more signposts—like a quick contextual aside when names or events fly by without explanation—would’ve made the experience more accessible to outsiders. Still, these are minor quibbles in a performance that otherwise feels like eavesdropping on a very funny, very bleak inside joke. By the end, you’ll either want to move to Romania to fight the good fight or pack your bags and never look back—and that’s the point.
