About This Audiobook

*If Not You...* isn’t just another star-crossed romance—it’s a story of bodily rebellion. Shern-Min Chow’s Nila refuses to be pitied or contained after a fire leaves her disfigured in 1940s India, and the novel’s raw physicality (the ache of phantom limbs, the weight of a sari on scarred skin) makes her defiance visceral. This isn’t a tale of triumphant healing; it’s about the messy, daily work of claiming agency when the world insists you’re broken.

Deepa Samuel’s narration is a masterclass in restraint—her voice never slips into melodrama, even as the story’s emotional stakes escalate. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors Nila’s own: deliberate, sometimes halting, with bursts of urgency when her rage or desire cuts through. What sets this apart from other historical fiction is its unflinching focus on the body as both prison and weapon, a theme amplified by Samuel’s ability to convey silence as powerfully as speech.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I braced myself for yet another ‘tragic woman finds love’ narrative when I started *If Not You...*—but Chow subverts that trope within the first hour. Nila’s relationship with the higher-caste boy isn’t the point; it’s her relationship with her own mutilated body that drives the story. Samuel’s performance sells this brilliantly: her delivery of Nila’s internal monologues about pain isn’t performative suffering but something far more interesting—*calculation*. You hear her measuring each word, each breath, like a woman who’s learned the cost of carelessness. The audiobook’s production is clean but not sterile, with just enough ambient texture (a distant temple bell, the rustle of fabric) to ground the listener in Nila’s world without distracting. My only critique? The flashback sequences sometimes blur together in audio form—Chow’s nonlinear timeline works better on the page, where visual cues help. And while Samuel’s upper-caste male voices are serviceable, they lack the nuance of her female characters. Still, the final act’s confrontation scene, where Nila’s voice cracks with exhaustion *and* fury, is worth the price of admission alone. This isn’t an easy listen, but it’s a necessary one—especially for anyone tired of stories where disabled women exist only to inspire others.
