I started *Immigrants and Patriots* expecting another glossy immigrant tale, but Baggett’s novel quickly proved me wrong. The story follows Johann and Anna Weber, a couple who abandon their homeland for Pennsylvania in 1751, chasing rumors of fertile land and religious freedom. What unfolds is less a triumphant arrival story and more a survival narrative, fraught with setbacks that feel painfully real. Baggett doesn’t shy away from the uglier aspects of this migration—disease, betrayal, the quiet desperation of families who realize their newfound land isn’t the paradise they imagined. The Weber’s journey is compelling precisely because it’s messy, their choices driven by desperation rather than heroism. Zach Oleck’s narration is the star here, and his performance is nothing short of masterful. He balances the weight of historical gravity with a conversational ease, making even the denser passages of political maneuvering feel accessible. My only quibble? At times, the pacing drags during the middle sections, where the focus shifts to broader colonial politics rather than the Weber family’s personal stakes. But Oleck’s ability to differentiate characters through tone and cadence—especially in tense scenes—more than makes up for it. The audiobook left me with a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices behind the American melting pot myth, and a nagging question: How many of us, in their shoes, would have made the same impossible choices?
