About This Audiobook

This 47-minute audiobook packs three of Charles Perrault’s most spirited fairy tales—*The Cat in Boots*, *Jack and the Beanstalk*, and *Tom Thumb*—into a brisk, bingeable listen. Unlike saccharine retellings, these stories retain their original wit and edge: the cat’s cunning isn’t just clever, it’s *audacious*; the beanstalk isn’t just tall, it’s a ladder to reckless ambition; and Tom Thumb’s tiny size becomes a weapon of mischief. The unknown narrator leans into a theatrical, almost old-world delivery—think campfire storytelling with a dash of Italian flair—making it feel like a performance rather than a reading.

What sets this apart is its unapologetic brevity. No padded introductions or moralizing asides; each tale jumps straight into action, trusting young listeners (and nostalgic adults) to keep up. The pacing mirrors the stories themselves: *The Cat in Boots* struts, *Jack* climbs with breakneck urgency, and *Tom Thumb* scampers. It’s a masterclass in how to adapt folklore for audio—economical, vivid, and just long enough to leave them wanting another listen.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached this expecting another by-the-numbers fairy tale collection. Instead, I got a *ride*. The narrator’s voice—raspy and expressive—gives the tales a lived-in quality, like they’re being recited by a wizened storyteller who’s seen these heroes (and antiheroes) in action. *The Cat in Boots* is the standout here: the narrator’s smug, purring tone for the feline trickster had me grinning, and the way they linger on the ogre’s demise (‘*Splat!*’) is darkly delightful. *Jack and the Beanstalk* loses some steam—it’s the most familiar of the three, and the pacing feels rushed compared to the others—but the giant’s voice, a guttural growl, saves it. My one gripe? The production’s audio levels are uneven. At times, the narrator’s volume dips during quieter moments (like Pollicino’s whispered plans), forcing me to crank up the volume—only to be blasted when the action returns. And while the Italian narration adds charm, non-native listeners might miss some nuances in the delivery. Still, for under an hour, it’s a steal. Perfect for car rides or bedtime, provided your kids can handle a cat who’s more con artist than cuddly—and a giant who meets a *very* sticky end.
