Moniqua Plante’s narration is a revelation, her voice carrying a raw, almost theatrical quality that turns the audiobook into a visceral experience. She nails the protagonist’s duality: a woman who’s both pitiable and terrifying, her obsession with the dead mirroring the way she’s consumed by her own desires. The pacing is deliberate, which works because the story’s strength lies in its slow-burn tension. Reid builds a world where necromancy is a forbidden luxury, and the stakes feel personal, not just epic. However, the audiobook’s reliance on atmospheric flourishes sometimes veers into self-indulgence; a few scenes drag as Plante overemphasizes the melancholy, which could have been trimmed for tighter pacing. Also, the secondary characters feel underdeveloped, their roles in the protagonist’s descent more symbolic than fleshed out. Still, these are minor quibbles in a book that’s relentlessly gripping. The production design—crisp audio, subtle sound effects, and precise pauses—enhances the gothic chill, making every moment feel like a step into the unknown.
