I’ll admit, I approached *Interregnum* skeptical of yet another ‘fall of Rome’ epic—until the opening scene, where Emperor Quintus burns alive in his own palace, his screams cut short by the man he trusted most. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just another historical retread. Turney writes civil war like a surgeon: clinical in detail, but the cuts *hurt*. The story unfolds in jagged flashes—battles that feel more like butchery than glory, political maneuvering where every handshake could be a death sentence, and a central betrayal that’s all the more devastating because it’s *earned*. Kiva Caerdin, the traitorous general, isn’t a mustache-twirling villain; he’s a man who loved his emperor and his empire, and destroyed both anyway. That ambiguity is the book’s strength. Marston York’s performance is outstanding, but not flawless. His pacing in the early chapters feels *just* a hair too deliberate, as if he’s measuring each word for maximum gravitas—fine for the weighty moments, but occasionally stifling the urgency of skirmishes or sudden betrayals. That said, his ability to convey exhaustion—physical, moral, emotional—is masterful. When characters weep, you *hear* the tears in his voice; when they lie, you hear the crack in their certainty. The production itself is pristine, though I’d have welcomed a touch more dynamic range in the quieter scenes (some whispers get lost in car playback). But these are quibbles. At 20 hours, *Interregnum* demands patience, but it rewards it with a story that’s as intellectually gripping as it is viscerally brutal. If you love historical fiction that’s more *I, Claudius* than *Gladiator*, this is your next obsession—just don’t expect to walk away unscathed.
