Marcio Catalano’s performance as the operative is a masterclass in restrained intensity; he doesn’t *yell* his trauma, he lets it seep into the silences between words, which makes his rare moments of vulnerability land like gut punches. The chemistry between the leads is electric precisely because it’s *unwanted*—Sahin writes their resistance as a physical force, something you can hear in the way Lucas’ voice tightens when her character lies to herself. The plot’s strengths lie in its tactical realism (Sahin clearly did her homework on close protection details) and its refusal to glamourize violence. A mid-book ambush sequence is so viscerally narrated—Catalano’s voice dropping to a growl, Lucas’ breaths shallow and rapid—that I actually paused to check my surroundings. My two critiques: the villain’s motives feel slightly undercooked compared to the nuanced leads, and the epilogue wraps things up *too* neatly after such a gritty build. But the narration elevates even the weaker moments; Lucas’ sarcastic asides during lulls in action keep the energy from flagging. If you love romance with stakes that feel real—where ‘happily ever after’ has to be fought for, not assumed—this audiobook will leave you breathless. Just maybe not for the reasons you expect.
