About This Audiobook

Fergus Fleming’s *Killing Dragons* isn’t just another history of mountaineering—it’s a rollicking, almost cinematic romp through the golden age of Alpine conquest, where ego, ambition, and sheer audacity collide against the sheer face of danger. Fleming isn’t interested in dry chronicles; he crafts vivid portraits of the era’s most flamboyant explorers, from the obsessive Edward Whymper to the tragic Edward Bulwer Lytton, whose misadventures read like Shakespearean farce. The Alps here aren’t just mountains; they’re proving grounds for human folly and genius, where every summit is a gamble with death. Fleming’s wit is sharp, his research meticulous, and his refusal to romanticize the victims of the era’s many disasters lends the book a refreshing authenticity. If you’ve ever wondered why anyone would risk their life for a patch of ice and snow, this audiobook will ruin you with its irresistible charm.

The narration by Richard Halverson is the secret weapon that turns this into an audio experience worth every hour. His voice is the aural equivalent of a well-aged whiskey—smooth enough to sip, but with enough gravel to make you lean in. He nails the book’s dark humor and high drama, shifting effortlessly from the stentorian bluster of Victorian-era braggarts to the hushed dread of a climber’s final moments. The pacing is relentless, mirroring the relentless drive of the explorers themselves, and the production quality ensures every gasp, scoff, or muttered curse lands with perfect clarity. Whether you’re a history buff or an armchair thrill-seeker, *Killing Dragons* delivers a story that’s as much about the human condition as it is about the peaks that dared them.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *Killing Dragons* with skepticism—I’ve heard enough tales of frostbitten toes and hubristic climbers to last a lifetime. But Richard Halverson’s narration sold me within the first 20 minutes. His voice has that rare ability to make a dense historical narrative feel like a fireside yarn, complete with the kind of dry wit that had me laughing out loud in my car. The way he paces the disaster scenes, slowing just enough to let the horror sink in before pivoting to the next absurd misadventure, is masterful. There’s a moment where he describes a climber’s rope snapping mid-peak, and his delivery was so visceral I actually flinched. That’s not easy to pull off in audio. That said, the book isn’t without its frustrations. Fleming occasionally gets bogged down in the minutiae of 19th-century climbing politics, and at times the density of names and dates risks turning what should be a wild ride into a slog. A tighter editorial hand could’ve trimmed some of the digressions without losing the book’s spirit. The production also stumbles slightly in the final hour, where a few abrupt cuts and volume inconsistencies suggest a rushed final edit. But these are minor quibbles for a narrative that’s otherwise so gripping. By the time I reached the epilogue, I found myself Googling the fate of every character Halverson had made me care about—a sure sign that this audiobook had done its job.
