About This Audiobook

Lisa Patton’s *Kissing the Sky* isn’t just a coming-of-age story—it’s a mixtape of rebellion, heartbreak, and the songs that stitch a young woman’s soul together during the most turbulent year of the 1960s. At 17, Ditto Colley is a spitfire with a tape deck for a heart, navigating the chaos of 1968 from her family’s rickety farm in Tennessee to the electric streets of Nashville. Patton’s prose crackles with the energy of a live concert, blending the raw authenticity of *Almost Famous* with the Southern Gothic grit of *The Heart is a Lonely Hunter*. What makes this audiobook feel alive isn’t just the era—it’s the way Patton weaves iconic hits into Ditto’s personal soundtrack, making each chapter feel like flipping through an old record collection where every scratch tells a story. Hallie Ricardo’s narration is the secret sauce: her voice swells with Ditto’s defiance, softens in moments of vulnerability, and never misses a beat—literally or emotionally. The dual narration with Patton herself bookending key moments adds a playful, meta touch that feels like eavesdropping on a best friend’s diary.

Production-wise, this audiobook is a sonic time capsule. The seamless integration of period-appropriate music (from Aretha Franklin to The Doors) elevates it from a mere story to an immersive experience, as if Ditto’s emotions are being scored in real time. The pacing is relentless but never rushed, mirroring the breathless energy of a teenager’s first crush or the slow burn of a family unraveling at the seams. Patton’s knack for balancing humor and heartache ensures that even the darkest moments feel buoyed by hope—or at least the hope that a perfect song can fix anything.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit I was skeptical about a novel structured around a playlist, but *Kissing the Sky* made me a believer. Hallie Ricardo’s narration is the audiobook’s MVP—her portrayal of Ditto lands somewhere between a scrappy underdog and a girl who’s one edgy playlist away from running away to Woodstock. Ditto’s voice is acerbic and whip-smart, but Ricardo keeps it from tipping into caricature; when Ditto’s world cracks (and it does), Ricardo’s delivery feels like a gut-punch. The dual narration with Lisa Patton works surprisingly well, especially in the framing chapters where she adds a wry, almost conspiratorial warmth, as if she’s pulling you into Ditto’s confidence. That said, the story isn’t without its stumbles. The romantic subplot with Ditto’s older (and slightly problematic) love interest feels a bit too neat, like a contrivance to tie up Ditto’s emotional arc in a bow. And while the music integration is brilliant, a few transitions between dialogue and songs are abrupt—almost jarring—like the needle hitting the record too hard. Still, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a deeply satisfying listen. The final third, where Ditto’s recklessness collides with her family’s unraveling, is handled with a rawness that lingers. If you’ve ever felt like your life’s soundtrack could outshine reality, this audiobook will hit you right in the feels.
