That said, the production isn’t flawless: a few abrupt edits between chapters jolt you out of the moment, and Szacsvay’s voice occasionally strains during louder passages (the ‘angry farmer’ scenes could use more dynamic range). What surprised me most was how *human* these stories are. Yes, the dogs steal the show—a Jack Russell with a Napoleon complex, a Labrador who moonlights as a sheepdog—but the real magic is in Herriot’s sketches of their owners. The gruff farmer who secretly spoils his spaniel, the village gossip whose terrier mirrors her nosiness: these details make the audiobook feel like a love letter to a vanished way of life.
