La ferocia

I went into *La ferocia* expecting another Southern Italian noir, but Lagioia’s novel is something far more unsettling: a story where the real beast isn’t the crime, but the system that created it. The audiobook’s 13-hour runtime feels like an endurance test at times, but Agrillo’s performance turns that endurance into a kind of dread—you’re trapped in this town with these people, and you can’t look away. His portrayal of the family patriarch, Enzo, is especially chilling: a man who’s spent his life treating people like currency, his voice dripping with the arrogance of someone who’s never had to answer for his sins. That said, the pacing isn’t flawless. The middle third drags slightly, bogged down by backstory and legal jargon that slows the momentum. Some listeners might find the nonlinear timeline confusing, though it ultimately serves the story’s themes of cyclical violence. The narration saves it, though. Agrillo’s ability to switch between menace, fatigue, and something almost tender when he voices the younger characters makes the audiobook feel like a living, breathing entity rather than just a recording. It’s not a comfortable listen, but it’s a necessary one.
