The pacing is relentless: Camilleri wastes no words on preamble, plunging straight into the massacre’s grotesque aftermath where the bodies pile high but the powerful remain spotless. The audiobook’s greatest flaw is its brevity; the second massacre in Agrigento feels rushed, as if Bruschetta had to abbreviate half the evidence to fit the runtime. Still, by the final chapter, the weight of the silence Camilleri reveals is crushing—Bruschetta’s voice itself becomes a character, whispering truths the archives refused to speak.
