By the time the *Grampus* is adrift and the crew turns on each other, Vega’s delivery has taken on a hollow, haunted rasp, as if the weight of the voyage has physically aged the narrator. His ability to modulate between hope, terror, and resignation is remarkable, though there are moments—particularly in dense dialogue sequences—where his pacing stumbles slightly, as if he’s struggling to keep up with Poe’s sudden shifts between brutality and lyricism. The production itself is crisp and immersive, with subtle sound design that places you on the deck of the ship or in the suffocating belly of the whale, but the real triumph is Vega’s restraint. He never overplays the grotesque or the supernatural; the horror emerges from what isn’t said, from the gaps between words and the way his voice cracks under strain.
