About This Audiobook

Last Friends is a gem of literary fiction, a wry and poignant exploration of a marriage that's as captivating as it is unconventional. Gardam's prose is sharp and evocative, painting vivid portraits of her characters with just a few deft strokes. What sets this audiobook apart is its unique perspective: the story unfolds through the eyes of Edward's friend and Betty's lover, Terry Veneering. This narrative choice lends the story an intimacy and immediacy that's utterly compelling. Roger Watson's narration is a perfect match for Gardam's style, his voice warm and engaging, capturing the story's wit and pathos with equal measure.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I was immediately drawn into Last Friends, its opening lines as sharp and inviting as a well-poured G&T. Watson's narration is a delight, his voice perfectly capturing Terry's wry, observant tone. The story moves at a leisurely pace, allowing Gardam's prose to shine, but I did find myself wishing for a bit more forward momentum at times. That said, the character studies are so rich and the dialogue so sparkling that I was more than happy to linger in their company. My only critique is that the ending feels a touch too neat, but it's a minor quibble in an otherwise excellent listen.
