I’ll admit, Proust’s middle volume of *In Search of Lost Time* tested my patience at first. The scenes in the Guermantes’ salons drag with the weight of their own importance, and the narrator’s endless musings on aristocratic trivialities can feel like wading through molasses. But that’s the point—Proust isn’t writing about excitement; he’s writing about the suffocating tedium of social climbing, where every invitation, every glance, becomes a high-stakes performance. By the time the narrator stumbles upon the Duchesse de Guermantes’ seventh salon, you start to understand why these people are exhausted by their own games. Mesguich’s narration is the reason this audiobook works as well as it does. His voice has a dry, amused authority that matches Proust’s tone perfectly—think of a French professor who’s seen it all and isn’t impressed. He nails the novel’s humor, especially in the characters’ blind spots: the way the narrator’s aunt prizes a mediocre portrait, or how the Guermantes themselves are revealed to be far more interested in gossip than grandeur. That said, the production can feel too polished at times, smoothing over Proust’s rough edges. A few moments of ragged breathing or ambient hum might have made the listening feel more lived-in. Still, if you’re willing to surrender to Proust’s rhythms, *The Guermantes Way* offers a razor-sharp satire of class and vanity that feels alarmingly modern.
