Learn the Play

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I pressed play on *Learn the Play*. Sports romances often lean into tired tropes—hunky athletes, forbidden love, and a tidy happily ever after—that feel more like wish fulfillment than real life. But Kaylee Ryan doesn’t just skate on the surface of that genre; she dives into the psychological fallout of loving someone who prioritizes their career above all else, and it’s devastating in the best way. Sloan isn’t just a woman who hates football because it broke her family—she’s a woman who’s built a fortress around her heart, and every crack in it feels earned, not manufactured. Ryan’s writing is compulsively readable, but it’s the audiobook’s narration that pushes it into the realm of unforgettable. Laurie West is a revelation as Sloan. She nails the duality of a woman who’s spent years guarding her emotions but can’t help the way her voice softens when she’s genuinely happy—even just for a moment. Her delivery is understated but never dull, and she makes Sloan’s internal monologues feel like a conversation you’re eavesdropping on, not a dialogue you’re being force-fed. Christian Black, meanwhile, is the perfect foil. His portrayal of the mysterious stranger (who, yes, is somehow even more frustratingly hot than the cover implies) balances charm with a simmering intensity that makes you question every assumption you have about him. The chemistry between the two narrators is palpable, and their pacing keeps the story moving at a clip that feels like a game clock winding down. If I have one critique, it’s that the secondary characters occasionally blur together, especially Sloan’s friends, who feel more like a Greek chorus than fully fleshed individuals. And while Black’s narration is stellar, there were a few times his delivery of the male lead’s internal monologues felt a touch too casual for the weight of the moment. But these are minor quibbles in an audiobook that otherwise delivers on every promise—a raw, emotional rollercoaster that’ll leave you cheering for Sloan even when you know the next play could gut her.
