Instead, I got a protagonist who spends half the book convinced he’s an imposter, and a plot that hinges as much on political maneuvering as it does on seamanship. Forester’s genius is making Hornblower’s internal monologues as gripping as the action sequences. When he’s forced to transport a Spanish nobleman across enemy lines, the tension isn’t just about French frigates; it’s about the slow unraveling of a man who’s *terrified* of being found out. Patrick Macnee’s performance is pitch-perfect for this material. His voice carries the weight of a man who’s seen too much, but there’s a slyness to his delivery that keeps the listen from feeling dreary. That said, his pacing can feel *too* deliberate in the book’s more technical passages—when Forester dives into naval tactics or rigging details, Macnee’s measured cadence occasionally makes the exposition drag. And while the abridgement is mostly seamless, a few abrupt transitions left me scrambling to catch up. Still, the payoff is worth it: the final act, where Hornblower’s cunning and desperation collide, is one of the most satisfying conclusions I’ve heard in historical fiction. If you love morally complex protagonists and narratives that balance cerebral tension with bursts of action, this is a standout. Just don’t expect to like Hornblower much—and that’s the point.
