About This Audiobook

Ryan W. Bradley’s *Like Swimming* is a razor-sharp micro-fiction that lands like a punch to the sternum. In just twenty minutes, it tells the story of Roy, a grizzled construction veteran whose hands are still steady but whose mind isn’t what it used to be. The writing is sparse yet vivid—Bradley trusts us to fill in the gaps between what Roy says, remembers, and can’t quite grasp. When a bright-eyed new hire joins his crew, Roy tries to teach him the ropes, not just about pouring concrete but about how to stand firm when the ground beneath you starts to shift. There’s a raw, unshowy wisdom here, the kind that lingers long after the last word fades.

The audiobook’s brevity is its secret weapon, and narrator Elijah Alexander sharpens it further with a performance that feels like eavesdropping on a real conversation. His Roy is weary but not resigned, gruff but not without tenderness, and his pacing allows the silence between sentences to hum with meaning. Alexander doesn’t overact; he leans into the weight of each word, making even mundane details—like the sound of a tape measure unspooling—feel like clues to Roy’s unraveling. It’s a masterclass in how to do a lot with a little.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Like Swimming* expecting a quick listen, not a gut-punch. Elijah Alexander’s narration sold me immediately; his Roy is the kind of guy you’d trust to show you how to lay brick but whose stories might trail off mid-sentence because his brain decided to wander. The production is clean and intimate, like a voice memo left on your kitchen counter, which only makes Roy’s rusty wisdom more affecting. The story’s power comes from what it doesn’t say—Roy’s forgetfulness isn’t dramatized with Hollywood-style panic attacks or heavy-handed metaphor. Instead, it’s in the way he mistakes the new hire’s name, or how he clings to the routine of mixing mortar like it’s the only thing keeping him from floating away. What didn’t quite land for me was the new hire’s role. He’s more a mirror than a character, which works thematically but leaves us wanting more texture. And while Alexander’s performance is stellar, the audiobook’s ultra-short runtime means some emotional beats risk feeling abrupt. Still, these are minor quibbles in a story that understands loneliness isn’t always loud. *Like Swimming* is the kind of audiobook that makes you pause, rewind, and sit quietly for a minute afterward, wondering how many quiet crises you’ve walked past without noticing.
