Loving the Knight

I’ll admit, I approached *Loving the Knight* skeptical of yet another ‘deceptive heroine meets brooding noble’ trope, but Tualla subverts expectations by making the lies *matter*. This isn’t a misunderstanding that could be cleared up with a five-minute conversation; the heroine’s deception is tied to her survival in a world where women are pawns, and Drew’s reaction—ranging from icy calculation to reluctant admiration—feels earned. Phil Williams’ narration is a masterclass in restraint. He doesn’t overplay the drama, which lets the story’s inherent tension breathe. His Drew is compellingly conflicted: a man who’s equal parts disillusioned warrior and reluctant romantic, and Williams nails the shift from commanding officer to a man unraveling under betrayal. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Tualla’s world-building is immersive, but there are stretches where court intrigue overshadows the romance, and the political maneuvering, while well-researched, occasionally drags. I also wished for more texture in the female characters beyond the protagonist—too many of the supporting women feel like archetypes (the scheming lady-in-waiting, the saintly sister). But the final act delivers a payoff that’s both emotionally satisfying and refreshingly ambiguous. Williams’ performance shines brightest here, particularly in the climactic confrontation with the king, where his voice drops to a lethal whisper. If you love romances with teeth and narrators who trust the text, this is a standout—but bring patience for the slower burns.
