About This Audiobook

Mad Mabel isn’t your typical octogenarian — she’s sharp, sly, and possibly unhinged in the best way possible. Sally Hepworth peels back the veneer of suburban politeness to reveal a simmering undercurrent of secrets, suspicion, and dark humor, all anchored by the unforgettable Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick. At eighty-one, Mabel shuffles through life in a nursing home, but don’t let the cardigans fool you: her mind is razor-wire taut, and her past holds more bloodstains than tea stains. Alternating between Mabel’s present-day schemes and her fractured memories of a turbulent life, the novel delivers a mystery that’s equal parts psychological puzzle and character study of womanhood across decades. Hannah Fredericksen and Jenny Seedsman split narration duties with striking precision — Fredericksen channels Mabel’s brittle defiance and wry inner monologue with a gravelly warmth, while Seedsman handles the younger voices and secondary characters with crisp clarity. The audiobook thrives in its contrasts: quiet moments laced with menace, humor stitched into trauma, and a pacing that lets tension build like a slow fuse. This isn’t a breakneck thriller; it’s a slow simmer with sudden, shocking bursts. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty with a dash of Shirley Jackson’s eerie irony.

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Mad Mabel expecting another quirky elderly detective, but what I got was something far more unsettling — and far more satisfying. The dual narration immediately sets the tone: Hannah Fredericksen’s performance as Mabel is nothing short of mesmerizing. She doesn’t play her for sympathy or caricature; instead, she leans into Mabel’s contradictions — her vulnerability and cunning, her charm and cruelty — making her feel dangerously real. Jenny Seedsman balances the cast well, though I found some of the younger characters a bit too polished, lacking the rough edges the story sometimes demands. The structure, which bounces between timelines, works better in audio than I anticipated — the narrators use subtle shifts in pacing and tone to keep the threads distinct. That said, the middle sags slightly under repetitive internal monologue, and a few twists feel telegraphed. Still, the final act delivers with chilling precision. What sets this apart is its willingness to sit in discomfort — it’s not just about whether Mabel committed murder, but whether we, as listeners, are complicit in excusing violence when it comes wrapped in lace and senility. Creepy, clever, and darkly funny, this one lingers.
