I went into this audiobook expecting a lighthearted romp with a side of supernatural snark, and K. M. Shea delivered—though not always in the ways I anticipated. Mason Vale is the kind of protagonist you root for despite his flaws: stubborn, reckless, and perpetually one step away from a magical disaster. The vampires, led by the infuriatingly charming Lord Malakar, are a delightful mix of menace and manipulation, and their dynamic with Mason crackles with tension. The magic system, while not groundbreaking, is fun to unpack, and the worldbuilding sneaks in through details like enchanted tech and sentient objects that add texture without overwhelming the story. That said, the pacing hiccups when Mason’s introspection takes center stage—sometimes his internal rants drag what should be a breezy 8-hour listen into a slog. And while Natalie Duke and Alister Austin’s performances are stellar overall, the seamless switching between narrators occasionally jars if you’re not paying close attention. Still, the audiobook shines in its quieter moments, like Mason’s reluctant camaraderie with the vampires or the dry humor in his one-liners. By the final act, the stakes feel earned, the romance is satisfyingly messy, and I was left wanting more of this bizarre, beautiful world. If you love your paranormal romance with a side of chaos and a protagonist who stumbles into brilliance, this is your next obsession.
