Marriage for One

I went into *Marriage for One* expecting a frothy, forgettable romp, but Maise’s clever subversion of the marriage-of-convenience trope kept me hooked. The premise is ridiculous—proposing to a stranger on day one?—but the execution is so sharp, it somehow feels plausible, like watching a heist movie where the villain is just really good at bluffing. Jack and our unnamed heroine (yes, she’s never named, which is a hilarious meta touch) are a fantastic foil: she’s all sharp edges and skepticism, he’s all arrogant charm and legal loopholes. Their dynamic is electric, even when the plot veers into melodrama. The real standout, though, is the audiobook’s narration. Stella Bloom and Lance Greenfield have the kind of chemistry that makes you forget you’re listening to two people reading—it feels like overhearing a real, messy, hilarious conversation. Bloom especially nails the heroine’s journey from guarded to unraveling, while Greenfield’s Jack is a masterclass in how to make a narcissist oddly endearing. That said, the audiobook isn’t perfect. The production stumbles in a few spots where the editing feels rushed, particularly during a key emotional scene that should’ve packed more punch. And while the ending is satisfying, it leans a tad too hard into rom-com contrivance, making the high stakes feel a little too neat. But if you’re here for the banter, the push-and-pull, and the sheer audacity of a love story that starts with a proposal and a prenup, this audiobook will have you grinning from ear to ear. It’s the kind of story that makes you want to shake the characters and scream, ‘Just kiss already!’—which, in rom-com terms, is high praise.
