But Carr pulls it off by **focusing on the emotional core**—Luther’s terror of God’s wrath, his ‘tower experience’ epiphany, the way his marriage to Katie von Bora humanized him. The writing avoids Sunday School piety; instead, we get Luther as a **flawed, fiery underdog**, which kids (and let’s be honest, adults) will root for. Lance Smith’s performance is **mostly excellent**, though I wish he’d leaned harder into the humor—Luther’s potty-mouthed letters to the devil (*‘I shart in your general direction’*) could’ve used more playful venom. The pacing stumbles slightly in the first chapter, where Smith’s cadence feels **too deliberate**, as if he’s reading to a room of fidgety third-graders. But once the story hits the Worms showdown, he finds his groove, and the audiobook **catches fire**. The lack of sound effects or music is a plus—this isn’t *Horrible Histories*, and the **raw, unembellished delivery** lets Luther’s own words (quoted liberally) do the work. My only real gripe? The abrupt ending. After such a vivid setup, I wanted **one more minute** to sit with Luther’s legacy, not just his death. Still, for sparking conversations with kids (or brushing up yourself), this is **lean, lively, and surprisingly moving**.
