I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘generational women fixing up a house’ premise—until the first chapter, when the protagonist’s mother casually mentions the cottage’s ‘character-building’ damp problem while handing her a chisel. This isn’t *The Holiday*; it’s a story where the romance is secondary to the sheer *labor* of love, both literal and emotional. Colgan’s writing here feels looser, funnier, and more willing to linger in awkwardness than some of her tighter romantic comedies. The dialogue crackles, especially in the scenes where the women’s clashing visions for the cottage mirror their unresolved grievances. (The subplot about the ‘accidental’ demolition of a load-bearing wall had me cackling—and wincing in recognition.) Eilidh Beaton’s narration is *almost* flawless. Her pacing is perfect, letting the humor land without rushing the quieter moments, and her character voices are distinct without veering into caricature. My only critique? The male characters occasionally blur together tonally, particularly the love interests, whose voices lack the same sharp individuality as the women’s. The production quality is crisp, though I’d have loved a touch more atmospheric sound design—just a hint of waves or wind to ground us in the setting during transitional scenes. Still, the audiobook’s strength lies in how it makes you *feel* the weight of the work: the exhaustion of sanding floors at midnight, the quiet triumph of a properly hung door, the way a shared meal can temporarily paper over old wounds. It’s not a perfect book (the third-act conflict stretches credulity), but it’s a *satisfying* one—like a cottage that’s still got a few drafty windows but finally feels like home.
