By the time the war’s shadow darkens the final chapters, the contrast between the book’s pastoral opening and its ominous close feels like a physical ache. Malk Williams’ narration is a masterclass in restraint. He resists the temptation to overperform the humor (a trap many narrators fall into with "quaint" British classics), instead letting Sassoon’s wit emerge naturally from the text. His pacing is deliberate but never sluggish, and his character voices—particularly the pompous Colonel and the world-weary Aunt Evelyn—are distinct without veering into caricature. My only critique? The production occasionally suffers from slight volume inconsistencies between dialogue and narration, a minor but noticeable flaw in an otherwise polished recording. And while the fox-hunting sequences are vivid, they *will* test the patience of animal-loving listeners; Sassoon doesn’t flinch from the brutality, nor should he. This isn’t escapism.
