The pacing is impeccable—Jolson slows just enough to let the gravity of a discovery sink in, then ratchets up urgency when the stakes rise. That said, the production stumbles slightly in the quieter scenes, where ambient noise occasionally muddles the clarity, a minor irritation in an otherwise polished performance. The real triumph here is how Jolson embodies the duality of Jane: a woman who’s both investigator and reluctant participant in the drama, her voice shifting from weary resolve to fiery determination with unsettling ease. The audiobook’s only misfire is the occasional overuse of musical stingers to punctuate tension, which feels a tad heavy-handed for a story that’s already dripping with atmosphere.
