I’ll admit, I went into *Merciless* skeptical—how many times can we repackage the ‘forbidden protector’ trope before it loses its bite? But within twenty minutes, Sean Masters’ narration had me hooked. His voice is the audiobook equivalent of a slow drag of fingernails down your spine: measured, deliberate, and loaded with subtext. When he growls, *“You shouldn’t look at me like that,”* it’s not a warning; it’s a dare. Charlie David’s performance as the object of that obsession is just as compelling, though I’ll confess his delivery took a chapter to grow on me—his initial breathiness occasionally tipped into over-enunciation, like he was *trying* too hard to sound wounded. Once the story’s rhythm settled, though, their back-and-forth became the audiobook’s secret weapon. The real standout here is how Frank and the narrators weaponize silence. This isn’t a book that relies on purple prose or over-the-top declarations; the tension lives in what’s *not* said. A paused breath before a reply. A sharp inhale when fingers brush. The production quality is flawless—no awkward edits or volume jumps—but I did dock it half a star for a few scenes where the pacing dragged. The middle act’s cat-and-mouse games, while deliciously tense, could’ve been tightened by 10-15 minutes. Still, the payoff is worth it. The climax (in every sense) is *earned*, and the final chapter’s raw emotional gut-punch left me sitting in my car long after I’d parked, unwilling to break the spell.
