About This Audiobook

Jo Beverley’s *Merely a Marriage* is a Regency-era gem where forced proximity meets high-stakes inheritance, wrapped in sharp wit and slower-burning heat. Norris Bagshott, a charming but commitment-averse earl, strikes a bargain with his relentlessly matchmaking sister: he’ll marry if she’ll stop badgering him—on one impossible condition. His bride must be an heiress, socially acceptable, and utterly uninterested in love. Enter Lady Ariana Boxstall, who isn’t just disinterested—she’s openly hostile to the idea of matrimony, let alone to a man who’s spent years dodging responsibility. Their clash of wills crackles with Beverley’s signature blend of dry humor and emotional nuance, but it’s the undercurrent of vulnerability that lingers longest. Ariana’s sharp tongue masks a woman desperate to control her own fate, while Norris’s bluster barely conceals his exhaustion with the aristocratic merry-go-round. The result is a romance where every concession feels hard-won, and the payoff isn’t just a wedding—it’s a reckoning.

The audiobook, narrated by Colleen Prendergast, elevates the material with a performance that’s equal parts polished and playful. Her voice crackles with Ariana’s sarcastic wit, yet softens effortlessly into Norris’s rare moments of sincerity, making their bickering feel intimate rather than staged. Prendergast’s pacing is a standout—she lingers just long enough on Beverley’s clever asides to let the humor land, without overdoing the dramatic pauses. The production is clean, with no distracting sound effects, letting the characters and their chemistry take center stage. Fans of witty historical romances with a side of social commentary will find this a satisfying listen, though those craving swashbuckling action may find the domestic focus a tad subdued.

AudioBook Atlas

Listening to *Merely a Marriage* felt like overhearing a private conversation between two people who’ve spent years talking past each other—until they can’t anymore. Colleen Prendergast’s narration is a masterclass in balancing humor with heart; her Ariana is all razor-edged wit and barely contained irritation, while Norris’s gruff, self-deprecating charm comes through in every muttered syllable. The real magic happens in the quieter scenes, though. When Ariana lets her guard down—even for a moment—Prendergast’s voice drops just slightly, as if she’s sharing a secret. It’s the kind of performance that makes you lean into your headphones, desperate not to miss a beat. My biggest critique? The book’s first act drags a bit in audio form. Beverley takes her time setting up the betrothal bargain, and while the setup is crucial, Prendergast’s energy (as strong as it is) can’t fully compensate for a few overly long stretches of negotiation. That said, once Ariana and Norris are under the same roof—preferably a drafty ancestral estate where they can’t avoid each other—the chemistry is electric. The production also occasionally leans into the era’s stodgy formality, with overly theatrical sighs that feel more Victorian caricature than authentic Regency tone. But these are minor quibbles in a romance that delivers exactly what it promises: a slow-burn battle of wills that ends in a marriage neither saw coming but both crave. If you’re here for emotional depth disguised as banter, this is your audiobook.
