I’ll admit: I approached *Miami Noir* skeptical of yet another ‘noir’ anthology trading on clichés. Five minutes into Scott Brick’s growling intro to **"The Big O"**, I was hooked—not by the plot (a PI tangles with a voodoo priestess, because *of course*), but by the *swagger* of the narration. Brick doesn’t just read; he *leers*, turning even a description of a stale Cuban sandwich into something sinister. The real revelation, though, is how the narrators lean into the collection’s tonal range. Joe Barrett’s performance in **"The Appointment"** is all sleazy charm, like a used-car salesman peddling murder, while Elizabeth Evans’ **"Mango Strut"** drips with the kind of sultry menace that’ll make you check your drink for poison. That said, this isn’t a flawless ride. A few stories (**"The Last Hotel"** comes to mind) meander into self-seriousness, their prose so dense you’ll rewinding to parse the metaphors—annoying in an audiobook. And while the production mostly shines, the abrupt shifts between narrators can jolt you out of the mood (Ray Porter’s gravelly **"The Home Invaders"** feels like a different universe after Jonathan Davis’ lighter touch in **"The Dead of Night"**). But the highs *soar*: R.C. Bray’s deadpan delivery of **"The Caretaker"**, a darkly comic tale of a nursing home gone feral, had me laughing in traffic. If you love crime fiction that’s as much about *place* as plot—and narrators who *become* the characters—this is a must-listen. Just maybe not before bed.
